My Good Death
   DALIA SHEVIN

I will find myself waist deep in high summer grass. The humming
shock of the golden light. And I will hear them before I see
them and know right away who is bounding across the field to meet
me. All my good dogs will come then, their wet noses
bumping against my palms, their hot panting, their rough faithful
tongues. Their eyes young and shiny again. The wiry scruff of
their fur, the unspeakable softness of their bellies, their velvet ears
against my cheeks. I will bend to them, my face covered with
their kisses, my hands full of them. In the grass I will let them knock
me down.

  1. Dear Dalia

What a beautiful poem, it made my day and filled my heart with joy as I thought of the many dogs I've loved over the past 55 years and how I long to see them all again one day. I can't imagine a better heaven. Thank you so much.

  2. I happened upon this poem a week before I had to have my sweet dog of 12 yrs euthanized due to cancer. It made me cry but was very comforting at the same time. Beautiful. Thank you.

  3. I came upon your poem a week after we put decided to put Max, our 10 year old Rotty, down. A few days later, Max came to me in a dream. He was once again bounding through the green fields - with his siblings. We humans think we are the only family our pets have. We forget that once they were part of another family, mother, father, sisters and brothers. I look forward to a time when I can greet Max again. He was my constant companion.

  4. Oh, I am so happy to find this poem! Just last week I mailed ten random old copies of The Sun to my cousin's husband in Montana (have interested him in subscribing to that wonderful magazine). I thought I should make a copy of the poem but was in a rush to get the package to the post office, so did not. Now, today, I wanted to send it to a friend -- but it is not a hot link at The Sun archives. Therefore, I am so thrilled to find your blog. And now, I will keep the poem forever!

  5. I must have missed this when I first read the Sun issue and then I gave my old copy away! So glad to have found this blog. Have a 14 year old in diapers now and lost a lab 12 years ago that the above photo reminds me (of both of us). I will see them in heaven. They are sure to be trippin under the Lords feet!
    Thanks!

  11. A good friend just suggested I look up this poem. I sent my boy to the Rainbow Bridge on 9/13/13, where he joined our girl, who has been waiting there since 4/21/11. Tears of joy right now. This is my prayer. I am overwhelmed and deeply appreciative for these beautiful words.

  13. This heart wrenching poem made my tears flow. Because, as a child, I was raised in a childcare home back in Kentucky in the Appalachian mts., And I claimed every stray dog there was. They were my rock and consolation, & helped me get through adolescence & puberty. As, I always had their unwavering love, friendship & companionship. And, throughout my life, I've always had dogs, but to this day I still love, miss & cherish all my past beloved furry friends & our memories. And I pray we'll all be reunited in glory some day!!!Thank you for putting in to poetry what the heart feels, but sometimes can not say.
